It is however; an unequivocal tie when all is said and done. The reason it's equal, is because despite the total absence of surface moisture in McMurdo Valleys, there is soil life beneath. Maria Elena South is an absolute 'sterile' zone, as stated later in this article, in the "Mars comparison" section. If anything it would be the Atacama location that has the best claim. In Elena South, it is an absolute sterile zone. undo Tag: Reverted

Although "polar" fronts occasional reach this area from the Southwest, true "Antarctic source" fronts absolutely never come anywhere near this far North. In the extremely rare incidences of snowfall in this region, it occurs only above 3000 meters (10,000 ft) altitude upon mid-latitude storm (polar front) arrival. This is well above the hyperarid region. undo Tags: Reverted references removed

It's generally accepted in the environmental scientific community that it's in fact a virtual tie between both places. Absolute moisture levels are truly meagre in both of these extreme deserts. undo
